Product Review: Pinty’s Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets

People with food allergies, sensitivities, or a special diet are always looking for something easy to cook. I know I am! Why? Because we get tired of cooking everything from scratch. Having a night off from doing dishes and slaving away over the stove is a blessing. Hence, chicken nuggets.

When you can’t have eggs, beans, most nuts, dairy or gluten, it gets a little challenging finding something that is quick and easy. At our local supermarket, this is the only brand of chicken nuggets that I have found I could eat.

Here is the ingredient list:

Chicken Nuggets: Chicken breast meat, water, rice starch, salt, spices, flavour; in a coatiing of; water, rice flour, yellow corn flour, modified corn starch, salt, corn starch, tapioca dextrin, sugar, garlic powder, granulated roasted garlic, onion powder, spices, pea protein isolate, dextrose, rice starch, flavour, baking powder, guar gum, modified cellulose, yeast. Fried in vegetable oil (canola and/or soybean).

Plum Sauce: Water, sugar, white vinegar, cider vinegar, tomato paste, modified cornstarch, apricot puree, plum juice, salt, garlic & onion powder, lemon juice, natural flavour, spices, benzoic acid.

When these little guys pop out of the package, they aren’t much to look. You can also see the breading isn’t very consistent. I am assuming it is because they don’t have an egg coating and the batter doesn’t stick well. Or it is the gluten free flour.

These are quite expensive and I usually just buy them when they are on sale. Normal price at our shop is $16.99 CAD. If I am lucky, I get them for about $14 CAD. You also get a little bonus of two plum sauce packs in the box.

There isn’t much chicken to these as they are quite skinny and flat. They are a little dry and I highly recommend eating them with a sauce. They definitely don’t taste like the ones from McDonald’s. I mostly enjoy them out of convenience. Sometimes I make my own from scratch, but it takes way to long. Tossing some of these in the oven with some sweet potato fries are the quick meal I pick when I am feeling tired or lazy.

These chicken nuggets aren’t the best by any means, but I will keep buying them until I can find another brand that tastes better.
